People First Bank are committed to transparency and accountability over our obligations to the environment. Below is a snapshot from our latest annual Carbon Emissions report, verified by Climate Active. You can learn more about Climate Active here. Climate Active are an Australian Government program designed to drive Australian businesses like People First Bank to make voluntary climate action through certification of a range of business activities which produce emissions, including:
• Buildings
• Events
• Organisations
• Precincts
• Products and services
In May of 2024, People First Bank received it's first Carbon Neutral Certification under the Climate Active Program. This program requires us to annually measure, reduce, report on and offset our carbon emissions.
We've broken down some of the key areas where our business produces emissions, as well as some of the strategies we're working on to ensure we continue to reduce our emissions.
*All emissions figures below are represented in metric tonnes of CO2 per year.
Emissions report snapshot for FY23
1,496
Metric tonnes CO2 in electricity consumption
In emissions from our consumption from the national electricity grid.
We are working to reduce the impact of these emissions regularly by purchasing Green Power from retail energy providers and participating landlords.
471
Metric tonnes CO2 in direct business emissions
This includes things like Natural Gas use, refrigerants and our Hybrid Car Fleet usage.
As part of reducing direct business emissions, People First Bank are exploring how and when we can transition our existing Hybrid Car Fleet to a fleet of EV vehicles.
1,897
Metric tonnes CO2 from ICT services
The usage by businesses of ICT services including data storage, networking, digital security and more, which help us provide services to our members securely.
The management and reduction of the emissions produced through ICT services is something we manage in conjunction with our ICT and service providers, in an effort to reduce our emissions output and operate more sustainably.
1,577
Metric tonnes CO2 through employee commuting
This is the total estimated annual production of emissions produced by staff travelling to and from work.
People First Bank provides sustainable working practices including hybrid working which are aimed at reducing, or in some cases, eliminating the emissions produced through commuting to and from places of employment where applicable.
1,021
Metric tonnes CO2 in advertising services
Advertising services which rely on either digital or physical production of material release emissions in the same way usage of ICT services does. The usage of technology, transport and service providers to share our business with more people has an impact on our net CO2 emissions.
In the same way we try to reduce our emissions through ICT services, we work with our advertising partners to continue improving our emissions levels. Technology allows us to track and assess the impact our promotions activity is having, helping us understand how we might be able to improve these figures in the future.
10,916
Metric tonnes CO2 in Supply Chain Emissions
Advertising services which rely on either digital or physical production of material release emissions in the same way usage of ICT services does. The usage of technology, transport and service providers to share our business with more people has an impact on our net CO2 emissions.
In the same way we try to reduce our emissions through ICT services, we work with our advertising partners to continue improving our emissions levels. Technology allows us to track and assess the impact our promotions activity is having, helping us understand how we might be able to improve these figures in the future.
922
Metric tonnes CO2 in Office equipment & supplies
The emissions produced through procurement and use of office supplies including stationery, paper and printer inks.
Through the progressive digitisation of internal documentation, member based initiatives and product application processes, we continue to reduce the impact of these practices.
1,027
Metric tonnes CO2 in corporate travel
This represents the emissions produced through corporate travel including flights, accommodation and so on.
Similarly to the digitisation of our office equipment and supply requirements, continuous review and assessment of corporate travel will continue to help us reduce these emissions, including through the use of tech over travel where applicable.
Climate conscious initiatives
Whilst our business is working to reduce our emissions output, we are also engaging in a range of activities aimed at offsetting some of those environmental impacts.
Below are some of the key focuses for our business, including active and planned works to reduce the impact of our emissions through positive action with organisations externally.
Human Induced Revegetation
Planting native trees in degraded areas helps restore biodiversity and improve soil health.
Savannah Fire Management
Supporting traditional fire management practices by Indigenous communities helps reduce wildfires and protect vital ecosystems.
